A new approach to Fibromyalgia!

© Barb Briley

Today Fibromyalgia is becoming well known as a word. What we know about Fibromyalgia as a whole still remains a grey vauge area for patients and doctors alike. How then can a medical society treat this disease while still unsure as to what exactly has caused it?

The answer to this question, as I know from personal experience, is not well and not easily. Too often the answers provided currently are, your nuts, Fibromyalgia is not a real disease or "Well we really don't know much."

What I have been doing for the past two years is interviewing other patients. In addition to those interviews I stalk the internet and most other forms of the media looking for what is working for doctors and patients. Practical application of ideas, medications and other techniques that can help our disease.

How is my approach new? To begin we are going to start coping with this disease as a daily effort. Suggesting and making positive changes in our lives, diet, exercise and medical care.

We are not going to just look at treatment of pain but this disease as a whole. Let us begin our new approach with our sleep.

Whats sleep? Sleep is something you probably no longer do. Re-establishing your sleep patterns must become foremost in your life.

The basics to good sleep include;

A daily routine that helps prepare you for bed. No work or stress up to an hour prior to bedtime. Scheduled regular sleep and rising times. Comfortable room temperatures. Adjust your room lighting to your needs. Relaxation techiniques which can include, meditation or tapes. Comfortable layered blankets so they can be removed or added as need. Loose fitting bed clothing. Proper support pillows for neck legs and arms if needed. Proper bed material, I prefer a heated bed myself. Less caffine, sugar and nicotine in your diet.

Most importantly if a tv makes you sleep use it. Most doctors will advise against this. What I have found is that most Fibros as I call us all seem to have a problem turning off their worry centers at night. The sound of a television or radio gives our minds something else to think about and may actually help. Unconventional advice but it works.

Today and for the rest of your life your quality of life is now the most important when coping with Fibromyalgia. Some of the ideas shared here are not standard ideas. They are not intended to be.

I sure agree that we need to see what works for us as each one of us is different. I find I go to sleep best if I can read until I start dozing off. It ...
