1. National Jewish Medical and Research Center - Denver, Colorado

For three years running, National Jewish has ranked #1 in the U.S. News survey. Founded in 1899 as a hospital for the treatment of tuburculosis and other lung diseases, it is the only hospital in the world that exculsively treats these conditions. It operates as a non-sectarian, not-for-profit, independent, clinical and research medical center.

2. Mayo Clinic - Rochester, Minnesota

Known world wide, the Mayo Clinic treats more than 400,000 patients per year in its inpatient and outpatient centers. Founded by Dr's. Will and Charles Mayo, the clinic also operates its own medical school and has Ph.D. programs to help train health care professionals. It's pulmonary services department is renowned for its occupational medicine program.

3. John's Hopkins Hospital - Baltimore, Maryland

John's Hopkins began its pulmonary medicine program in earnest in the 1950's when Dr. Richard Riley began working on such "new" diagnostic techniques as arterial blood gasses. It's excellence has continued to today with its work in the area of lung transplantation and pulmonary hypertension.

4. Barnes - Jewish Hospital - St. Louis, Missouri

The Respiratory Care Department provides a wide variety of pulmonary and respiratory care services to patients who suffer from deficiencies or abnormalities of their cardiopulmonary system. Therapies and diagnostic procedures are performed by respiratory care practitioners in a goal-oriented manner.

5. University of Colorado Hospital - Denver, Colorado

The University of Colorado Hospital offers one of the finest emphysema surgery facilities in the United States. It also has an adult cystic fibrosis center and a center devoted to the treatment of pulmonary hypertension.

In summary, if you have pulmonary problems, the best location based on this survey to find quality treatment appears to be Denver, Colorado with two of the top five centers for the study and treatment of pulmonary medicine.
