An area that is often neglected by both the COPD patient and the physician is the area of sexual activity. This is unfortunate, since many COPD patients experience shortness of breath and fatigue during sex and therefore lose some of the enjoyment that they shared with their partner before contracting COPD. Many people are reluctant to talk about sexual issues, and therefore this problem grows because they do not understand that there are things which can be done to reduce the stress on the respiratory system. Additionally, as the problem becomes significant, there is a tendency to become anxious or depressed, further adding to the difficulties.
It is also important your partner to understand that, instead of abstaining from sexual activity in an attempt to not add to respiratory problems, resuming intimate behavior can significantly reduce the lonliness and isolation that the COPD sufferer often feels. Here are seven facts that will help you and your partner dispell the myths surrounding sexual behavior and COPD. 1. Research shows that the pulse, blood pressure or respiration rate do not increase to dangerous levels during intercourse. 2. Sexual activity takes approximately the same amout of physical effort as climbing one flight of stairs. 3. Breathing medications do not affect the sex drive, however other medications, such as antidepressants might, so check with your doctor to find out how these might interfere with sexual activity. 4. Many of the changes in sexuality are not related to your lung disease. They are a part of the normal aging process. 5. COPD does not diminish sexual drive or ability. It may limit frequency however, as do most strenuous physical activities. 6. There are sexual positions which reduce the pressure on the chest, therefore reducing the shortness of breath. There are also positions which require less physical activity. Choosing these types of positions will reduce your shortness of breath and fatigue. 7. Remember, intimacy is more than intercourse. Simply touching, holding and sharing with your partner helps to reduce the stress and performance anxiety that might be felt. In other words, take your time and savor the intimate moments you and your partner share. With these facts in mind, both individuals can enjoy a full and satisfying sex life, and reduce the stresses that COPD can cause. While COPD will limit many of your activities, the limitations can be controlled or reduced. This can help both partners enjoy their intimate moments together to their fullest and feel secure in knowing that nothing adverse will occur. Go To Page: 1 2
