LET'S GET THINGS STARTED

Dec 10, 1999 - © Vaudie E. Harrison

Last week, I pointed you to several websites where you were able to find a bunch of candy and cookie recipes for the kids of all ages in the family. Of course, Christmas just wouldn't be the same without that kind of "goodies" for everyone in your family. There's just nothing like the smell of fresh baked goods coming from the kitchen. Greatest smell in the world--at least in my opinion.

The grownups in the group will love the cookies just as much as the kids do, but there's a good chance that they would also enjoy a big platter of cut and sliced vegetables and a bowl or two of dip to go along with them. Great tasting and very healthy snacking before the main meal. Gives them something to keep them busy and stave off the hunger pangs until the main meal.

However, now is the time to begin planning the main meal that you will be serving all your guests. This week, I'll give you a couple of different ways to start the meal. Next week, I'll be talking about the main course for the meal--including the dish that Grandma will be serving at our house. AND IT WON'T BE TURKEY.

Most of us will start the meal with a salad of some kind and that's a good way to start things off. However, this year instead of serving that same old tossed green salad, as in years past, you might want to try one of the following salads. They're different, attractive and they taste good. <<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<

MONTEREY MELODY

2 Medium Seedless Oranges

1/2 Medium Sweet Bermuda Onion (Sliced)

1 Firm Ripe Avocado

2 Large Firm Ripe Bananas

1 Head of Iceberg Lettuce (Broken into bite-size pieces)

Peel the Oranges and slice into thin slices. Cut each slice in half. Separate the Onion slices into rings. Cut the Avocado in half, peel and pit it and slice lengthwise into thin slices. Peel the Bananas and slice diagonally into thin slices. Place the broken Iceberg Lettuce into a large salad bowl. Arrange the Orange slices, Onion rings, Avocado slices and the Banana slices attractively on top of the Lettuce. Drizzle 1 Cup of your favorite Basil flavored Vinegarette dressing over all the ingredients. Toss lightly to mix. Chill and serve. <<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<

This next salad is unusual since it uses Grapefruit combined with fresh Strawberries or Avocado. Don't let the different ingredients make you shy away from this great tasting salad. Give it a try and I think that you'll love it as much as we do here on the 'ole homestead.
