Book Review – Month of Meals: One Day to a Freezerful of Entrees

Kelly Machel's Month of Meals is designed as a three-ring binder with freezing tips, a guide for planning, shopping, and cooking, and recipes. Each section is marked with a divider tab and the loose-leaf format makes it easy to add your own recipes and tips as you learn.

Kelly begins her book by telling her own story of how cooking ahead has made her life much easier. As a busy woman, she struggled to get a healthy meal on the table at night, and found the answer to simplifying her life in cooking ahead.

The book discusses freezer containers and tips for freezing. The author includes a handy chart that tells you at a glance how to freeze many different foods, how long you may freeze them, and how to thaw and cook them. Then author goes step-by-step through a once-a-month cooking session and includes blank forms that may be copied for your own use.

Much of the book is made up of recipes that the author has adapted for freezing. Each recipe includes instructions for freezing, thawing, cooking and serving. There is a form in the back of the book to mail in to the author to be put on her mailing list, and she will let you know when more recipes are available for you to add to the cookbook.

One of the great things about this book is its format. I like the fact that it is loose-leafed and can be added to as needed. The forms to copy are the right size to fit neatly into the book. They leave plenty of space for writing so you won't have to enlarge them on a copy-machine. It does leave out some alternatives to once-a-month cooking, such as twice-a-month cooking or once-a-week cooking. The recipes are almost all single-meal recipes and there are no directions for doubling, tripling, or quadrupling recipes, which can be one of the main advantages to cooking ahead.

This book would be great for a beginner because it does allow for additions, and could work like a recipe scrapbook as well as a guidebook.
