Book Review - Prevention's Freezer Cookbook: Quick Dishes for a

Prevention's Freezer Cookbook by Sharon Sanders is one of the many books that deal with cooking ahead. This book deals with using your freezer as a helpful kitchen appliance, both for freezing meals that you have cooked ahead and for storing your ingredients that have been purchased ahead of time.

The cookbook has a section at the front devoted to some of the "how-tos" of freezing foods. Topics such as what freezes well, how to package foods for the freezer, and how to defrost foods are covered. The author does a good job of explaining the use of the freezer to someone who has little experience with using their freezer, and also helps the cook to evaluate his or her needs and make a decision about what type of freezer to purchase.

The majority of the cookbook is filled with recipes that are either appropriate for freezing after being prepared, titled "For the Freezer," or recipes that would be prepared from ingredients that are frozen, titled "From the Freezer." Each recipe is given one of these labels and the recipes "For the Freezer" have detailed instructions on how to prepare, package, thaw, and reheat.

The cookbook has many recipes, including salad, appetizers, side dishes, main dishes, and desserts. The recipes are varied, and include many traditional foods as well as foreign cuisine. Vegetarian recipes are included, as well as information on adapting some recipes to a vegetarian diet. Each recipe contains nutrition information per serving and even cost per serving, which many cooks find helpful.

This cookbook does not cover "bulk cooking" in great detail, so if you are new to the area of mega-cooking or once-a-month cooking, this may not a book you would want to refer to for guidance in the beginning. The author does a great job of giving instructions as to how to package each dish for freezing, but these are specific to each dish. There is little guidance given in how to adapt your own recipes for freezing.

In short, this is a cookbook, not a guidebook for cooking ahead. You'll find some great recipes specifically adapted for freezing, but look to other books for guidance in meal planning for a bulk-cooking session.
