Is there a nut lover in your life? These sweet little treats are just perfect for them! If you like a stronger almond taste, substitute almond extract for the vanilla.
Almond Squares 1 egg; 1 teaspoon vanilla; 1 cup shortening; 2 cups all-purpose flour; 1/2 cup white sugar; 1/2 cup packed brown sugar; 9 (1 ounce) sqares of unsweetened chocolate; 1/2 cup chopped almonds Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Grease a 9 inch square baking pan and set aside. To make crust: In a large bowl, cream shortening, white and brown sugars. Separate egg and beat yolk and vanilla, stirring until well blended. Slowly add the flour to the yolk mixture and beat well. Mixture will be stiff. Press dough evenly into baking pan. Bake for 18 to 20 minutes, or until top is golden brown. Melt the chocolate in a double broiler over low heat. Spread the melted chocolate over warm crust, sprinkle top with almonds. Let cool on wire rack before cutting. Makes 12 yummy servings!
