Fried Cookies--Krusczyki

© Crysta M. Curtiss

I was searching around for something different to try this weekend, and I came across this recipe for a fried cookie that my children thought was great. Most of the time they were eaten before they were even cool. (Kind of like when I make fried bread - they just can't wait!!!) The recipe is called "Kruszyki," which I assume is some type of ethnic recipe, but I don't know anything more than that. It sounds sort of Russian to me, but believe me, I have NO clue. I would love to learn more about this! If anyone knows more about the origin of this recipe, or maybe some customs it is associated with or anything like that, I would love to hear from you! Add your information in the "discussion on this article" section at the bottom of this page, and I will add your information to this article!!!

Kruszyki

14 egg yolks; 1 pint sour cream; 2 tsp. vanilla; 1 tsp. salt; ½ cup butter; 8 cups flour (all-purpose); 1 ½ cups shortening; 1/3 cup powdered sugar (more as desired)

In a large bowl, mix together all ingredients, form into a ball. Turn dough out onto floured surface and knead for ½ hour, or put in mixer with dough hook attachment for 15 minutes.

Let dough rest 15 minutes.

Flour work surface and roll dough out to ¼" to 1/8" thick. Cut into strips 3" long and 1" wide. Cut a 1" slit lengthwise in center. Pull one end of the strip through slit to form bow.

In a frying pan or electric skillet, melt shortening and heat to about 350 degrees (farenheit). In a frying pan this would be about medium heat. Place dough in hot oil and brown both sides, remove to a paper towel. Dust finished cookies with powdered sugar.
