Potboiler: An Amateur's Affair with La Cuisine (Robert Canzoneri)
A middle-aged English professor takes it into his head to learn to cook. He experiments, often far too boldly for taste, and writes up the result. It's a charming little book, filled with anecdotes and recipes: a happy way to pass the time for those that enjoy reading cookbooks in bed. The recipes themselves leave a bit to be desired. He's very fond of a highly conversational style--"a bit of this, a pinch of that" school. Not very good instructions for the novice cook, and very likely not as good as it could be if he were actually in the room with one. Trial by Fire: Omelets I do like omelets, but have always been afraid to try, they seem so difficult. I usually compromise on having scrambled eggs with flavorings tossed in. Here Canzoneri's easy style makes the process of properly cooking an omelet approachable. The result: not overly attractive, but edible, and worth attempting again. Go To Page: 1
