Eat Your Way Across the USA

In "Eat Your Way Acroos the USA," Jane and Michael Stern have taken up the challenge of finding good mom-and-pop style restaurants that the hungry traveller can visit when in desperate need for a home-cooked meal to lift his or her spirits. The restaurants hours are listed, a nice touch for those of us that have searched out an out-of-the-way place before only to arrive to locked doors and a lights-out dining room. I'm happy to say that I've eaten at a few of these places--the Dillard House in north Georgia is indeed made for gargantuan appetites, but if you arrive hungry, there's no place better. The Roanoker in yes, Roanoke, VA was one of my favorite places to eat as a kid--biscuits, gravy, and ham that is absolutely stupendous.

If you find yourself on the road a lot, or planning on taking an extensive trip, you owe it to yourself to pick up a copy.
