Drinking the Leftovers

I recently ordered a subscription to this magazine, tired of trying to cram in reading while waiting in the check-out line at the grocery store. Especially since I've taken lately to ordering my groceries!

The July issue has, if nothing, else, an utterly gorgeous cover, a silver spoon filled with blueberries, against a backdrop of pale violets (I think--at any rate, the color is pale violet!)

It turns out that the editors had also considered a cover of watermelon, an appropriate thing for the middle of summer. But it didn't photography quite as stunningly, and they were left with a kitchen filled with chunks of watermelon. Inspiration struck, and the Ladybug was invented. Turns out watermelon seeds are edible (to heck with spitting them out!), so you can freeze watermelon for about an hour, mix with lime juice, lime sugar, and tequila or vodka, and voila! summertime spirits.

The only trouble, really, was the lime sugar. They provide very specific directions on how to zest a lime, which I promise I followed faithfully, but to no avail. Even looking at it, I could tell that it wouldn't do at all. So, for me, I just used extra lime juice, which seemed to work just fine.

The problem, however, is that they have a couple of recipes that require lime sugar (like lime sugar cookies) that sound just wonderful, but not for me. Sigh.

If you have slices of watermelon about the house, take a look at http://www.watermelon.org for ideas on what to do with them!

Of, if you have extra tequila or vodka about, try http://www.cocktailtimes.com for interesting drink ideas. Be the hit of your next get-together!
