When I was about 7 months pregnant with my first son, I went through pangs of nesting, as most women do when they are expecting a child. My parents are of British descent, and I lived in Argentina for a short period of time. So, the concept of Afternoon Tea has been in my life. I suddenly felt the urge to pass this tradition on to my future child! So, I found this great idea! It's a cookbook, along with a CD! It's called "Afternoon Tea Serenade" by Sharon O'Connor. The author is a musician and author as well as a cook. "Afternoon Tea Serenade" is her 12th release!
This book explains the origins of Afternoon Tea, as well as the history of tea drinking, the varieties of teas (such as black, green and herbal), recipes and how to make the perfect cup of tea. She suggests how to pick suitable tea cups and offers some suggestions as to how to throw a themed tea party, such as a Bridal Shower Tea, a Baby Shower Tea and much more.
The book is filled with delicious recipes from famous tea houses in the United States, England and Ireland. Such recipes include Welsh Rarebit, Cucumber and Mint Sandwiches and Barmbrack. I have tried quite a few of the recipes and they each have turned out wonderfully. Some of them reminded me of the times when my mother used to make these very same meals! These recipes, also, made me yearn to travel to places such as England, Scotland and Ireland, so I may indulge myself in the elegant art of Afternoon Tea.
Included within this set is a CD, which contains classical music to set the atmosphere. When I listened to this CD, I felt like I was back in the late 1800s during Victorian times! Artists on this CD include Bach and Mozart. Each piece is wonderful, and I am sure you will recognize a few, if not all of the pieces! The music had a most calming effect on me and completed the environment that the author was hoping to create.
