I'll Get To That As Soon As I....

I was forwarded an email this week about a woman who needed to do her laundry but kept getting sidetracked with the mail, dirty dishes, a dog and all those other things we get diverted with at home. She never did start the laundry. It was very funny but the fact that I could relate slowed me down in my tracks. I've had days like that too when I've gone from one activity to another to another, because each one seemed to scream at me that it was a priority. I would never actually finish anything and then at the end of the day when I was tired, I would realize nothing got done ALL DAY! But I was SO busy!

Clutter has a winning tactic of getting us to scatter our focus on many little things and keep us on the move, either away from the clutter or into the clutter. We either can't stand the mess so we leave it and go to work or we volunteer or we shop and if that doesn't work then we try attacking the clutter and go full steam into the piles only to realize that it's an overwhelming task. It's a horrible cycle and each day brings the same result. We move papers from one place to another and hide things in cupboards and drawers and we bury our ambitions in fear that we can't do it all.

We have to change our thinking. It's that simple. We have to follow through on just one thing at a time. What will get accomplished if we do everything at once? The answer of course is nothing. We may feel like we answered every call to our attention but where did that get us? On the losing side of the clutter battle.

Think about one thing you want to change. Think about one thing that needs to be dealt with. Plan an attack. It will be so energizing to see that it wasn't impossible after all, but save your strength. Remember, it takes a commitment to one thing at a time to move forward and not back.

Clutter doesn't have to be in control. Clutter doesn't need a voice that screams to you, "Over here! No, over there!" Clutter is just something we will all deal with in our time, but for success let's handle one piece and then another in a cadence of our own personal victory.
