In My Next Life I Want To Be Organized

When I was on vacation last month I had no access to a computer. To utilize my laptop I would have had to run a noisy generator to keep the battery charged up because we had no electricity. I resorted to pen and paper to write. It turned out to be quite a pleasant experience. On warm days I was able to sit outside with my pad of paper to write at a weather worn picnic table and look out at the Pacific Ocean. The sea warmed me with its breeze and loosened wisps of my hair from the elastic holding it out of my eyes. Like many other things I would notice while taking a break from my hectic life back home, I felt that writing the "old fashioned way" was a refreshing change.

It's human nature to look for easier ways of doing things as well as making improvements as we go along on our journey through life. That's why for many of us computers play an important role. It's also why we have so many kitchen gadgets. In our quest to improve the quality of our lives have we lost the simplicity of past innovations?

At a potluck for residents of the small beach resort community where I recently spent two weeks, I overheard many people talking about ways of cutting down on the amount of garbage that was going to the dumpster. Since it costs everyone money to have the trash hauled away, the more that is burned or eliminated the better. Someone talked about having the chore as a child of emptying the 'dust bin'. This was the ashes in the bottom of the fireplace, the only evidence of household refuse they had. Is it just me or have we gone in the wrong direction when it comes to our excesses? We are building mountains of garbage at our landfills. Many of us live with hectic schedules and hold onto our possessions in fear of losing what we've worked so hard to achieve. Maybe a change is necessary. Maybe we should all just start over. In a new life I would do so many things differently. For starters I would be organized, and I wouldn't have excesses to simplify my life. In a new life I would recognize that the one way to simplify is to begin with simple needs and wants and never desire more than that.
