A Seven Year Old Case Of The MessiesThe following is a transcript from my interview with Devon, a seven year old girl trying to deal with clutter: Janet: What would you call clutter if you could give it a name of your own? Devon: I think I would call it ‘the messies.' Janet: What is clutter? Devon: I would say it is when there's lots of stuff in one place. Janet: What kind of stuff? Devon: All kinds of things. It can be pretty much anything. Sometimes clutter can be a bother. Janet: How so? Devon: Because sometimes when you have too much stuff it's hard to decide where it goes. Janet: How does clutter make you feel? Devon: I don't feel very good because it's hard to get rid of and hard to get through to other things like my closet. Janet: Does it make you feel sad or angry? Devon: It depends on how much clutter there is. Janet: Can you explain? Devon: Well if there's lots of toys I like in the clutter it's hard to think where to put everything because I want to put it pretty much all in the same spot. Janet: So you don't have enough places to put things? Devon: It depends really. Janet: On what? Devon: Well sometimes when I have big things it is really hard to decide because they're so big and also you don't exactly get the picture sometimes of where things are going to fit. Janet: What do you mean by "get the picture"? Devon: Well what I mean is trying to imagine what your room looks like when you're moving things around before you move them because sometimes when I'm moving things around I realize it's not going to fit. Janet: Do you have a problem with clutter in your bedroom? Devon: I do right now. Janet: What are some ways to get organized? Devon: I would say to move everything out and then try to put things back in where I think they should go. Janet: You said you don't have enough places to put things, what could you use to put your things away and get rid of clutter? Devon: Lots of shelves and hangers. Shelves that move around (on wheels) would be good for me. Janet: How can kids keep their rooms clean? Devon: By moving a lot of stuff out if they have a lot of stuff in their rooms. Janet: You think it's better to have less stuff than to try and organize everything? Devon: I would say it's better to organize things but it's hard when you have a lot of things to organize.
