Having No Time = Clutter

It seems everywhere I turn these days I see a reference to time management. Everyone is looking for more time. We all know we can't get more than 24 hours in a day yet we hope that somehow there will be a solution to get more done. Are we letting ourselves believe that even though we feel busy all day long that we are wasting time? What are we wasting time on? Ok, yes I admit to spending too much time checking and reading email when I should be planning dinner menus for the next week and making up a grocery list for shopping. Oh yeah, and instead of watching the season finale of my favorite television shows I should have been filing my invoices that were paid up on the 15th. But I don't think that's effective time management. It may be what I should be doing but I've noticed two things about effective time management. First of all, if I have to spend my time doing something that doesn't bring a desired reward, I will avoid it at all costs. And the cost? Well with the grocery shopping I will end up spending more money because my list is incomplete and I will likely buy extras I don't need plus I will still have no idea what to make for dinner. As for filing, it ranks up there for me with cleaning the toilet bowl but I do need to keep track of my billings and to do that I need to have the paperwork filed for easy reference.

The second thing about time management that I've noted is that in trying to adapt a simpler life style, there just isn't room for rigid routines and lists and yet without them I have no direction. But I don't need to manage my time when I'm bringing a smile to my daughter's face by telling her that she is wonderful in some way, instead of rushing by her in the kitchen complaining on my exit to the laundry room that she never puts anything away. The time I take to compliment her is time well spent, just like the time I took to be with my husband while we watched television. I was refreshed afterwards from enjoying a good laugh and I was able to return to my desk and get some more work done instead of letting things pile up for the next day.
