Does It Pay To Be A Slob?

© Janet Kitto

I've never enjoyed living in an unorganized state, if anything I try very hard to live the opposite way. But just think, if you had a chance at winning a large sum of money for your story about clutter would you expose yourself over the Internet like this college student did?

I don't think anyone wants to live with chaos, but the proof is out there. Clutter can take control of anyone. Whether you are a college student or a grandparent, single or raising a family, you can find yourself dealing with excesses in your life. Clutter can converge on you at home or at your office. So if clutter is everywhere and lives with everyone, is there a way for clutter to pay? Maybe if you tried insulating your home by lining your piles of stuff along the walls, you may be able to recover some of the 30 - 50% of energy loss in a poorly insulated home. If you are a collector and have kept absolutely everything since the dawn of time, you may have some priceless junk that can be sold at a garage sale, or better yet, auctioned off on eBay. You may have enough newspaper stacked in your basement to collect big on the scrap paper market. Somehow I just don't see how it pays to be a slob though, unless you win big like the college student mentioned above. Will his prize earnings change his ways? Or will it buy him more clutter?

When clutter rules, there are costs we must deal with. The more we have, the more we pay for the space to house it and the more we have, the longer it takes us to keep track of our things. Even if we have good intentions, the interest in the stash and stack lifestyle becomes a legacy we pass on to our children. What value do we place on sanity or happiness? What about simplicity? Let's change the balance in our favour and make our own rules. We pay a high price to live with clutter. Sure, a large sum of money would be a benefit any of us would love, but in the end, it never pays to live with clutter.
