Planning to Get Organized

Let's pretend that a service is being offered to you from the Organizational Genie. What? You didn't realize there was an Organizational Genie? Well sure, she lives with the Tooth Fairy. You should see what she's done with all those teeth! Anyway, this service that she offers you is only good for one day. For a 24 hour period, everything you do from the time you wake up until the time you go to bed will be logged in a special book. At the end of the 24 hour period the genie will analyze the data and look to see if you are spending enough time on priority activities, then she will decide what percentage of time you should spend on each activity. She will help you to schedule your day by ensuring your time is well managed.

If this is too hard to imagine, or you just can't believe in the Organizational Genie, don't despair. You too can log your activities over a 24 hour period to see where your day goes. You won't get a special, gold encrusted book to use, or a solid gold pen to keep, but hey, a simple pad of paper and a pen will suffice. Note everything. You will likely be amazed at where your time goes.

To determine what is important to you, make a separate list and detail what areas of your life you need to organize and declutter. Decide how much time you are willing to spend on each activity. Compare the value of how much time you would like to spend versus how much time you actually spend. Now you can begin to plan your days by balancing the percentage of time needed for each job.

I hope this will help you to bring some balance into your life. Remember, you don't have to click your heels three times or wish upon a star to experience the magic of becoming organized and clutter-free. Just believe in yourself and stock up on the tools of the Organizational Genie: a daytime planner to schedule your activities, a detailed list of projects you want to get done, an estimated amount of time each project will take, and a wonderful reward for each task completed. The Organization Genie presents her apprentices with gold embossed file folders but you may wish to endow yourself with something a bit more practical.
