Letting Love In

Thank goodness! The Christmas decorations and candy canes have finally been put away. It's time for Cupid to draw his arrow for Valentine's Day. This day is no longer about bestowing on that one special person something made by hand. The idea of a secret admirer has been replaced by the commercialization of yet another day once celebrated for its uniqueness. Valentine's Day is just another calendar day that obligates us to shop. With cards and candy a common theme, we head to the stores in a daze with our dollars. The children want their favorite heros and heroines to give to classmates. The radio and television airwaves, the Web, print newspapers and magazines, all call out to us the need to validate our significant other with something sentimental. The market is sweetened for sweethearts. But it doesn't stop there. There are valentines for friends, funny ones for your co-workers and your boss.

Is there real love in that? Can love be marketed? Everyday, there is love in the simpleness of a touch or a thought expressed. You don't have to wait for the middle of February to find it. Love is simple. Yet aren't we complicating our lives by believing that we can express our love only with the aid of something materialistic? On top of that, we clutter up our feelings with rules dictated by society instead of by individual choice. We create this wonderful little manufactured box and try and fit our relationships into it. The voids are filled with those misunderstandings we hold onto. The box gets packed with our anger that is folded away with our pain. Is it any wonder that love gets lost in all of that?

Take a look at your true feelings. Discard any that come from past hurts or are caught up in disagreements. Give up your feelings of jealousy and inadequacy. Put away those feelings you are unsure about. They can always be examined another time when you've cleared away the clutter. Put your trust in those feelings that bring you joy and comfort. Throw away any expressions that carry emotional garbage. Unclutter your mind and your heart. Let love in! Before you know it, you'll have love in your life all year round. Love will surround you, nurture you, it will make you grow in ways you never imagined. We all need and crave love. Simple, pure love.
