Christmas Wish List For The Disorganized

The Christmas season is always busy, busy, busy. Who has time to keep the house organized? It's supposed to look merry and bright because you have 20 guests coming for an elaborate dinner and what would they think if they saw naked wrapping paper tubes taking over the bedroom floor and dishes stacked a mile high from a baking frenzy? Entertaining during the holidays is supposed to look effortless. You should have time to look like the model in the department store flyer, your kids should be well behaved, and your house should be perfectly decorated and spotless. The food you serve should be glorious, and there should be extra hours in the day to bake for those less fortunate. Oh yeah, and you're supposed to be enjoying yourself.

Will anyone notice that your closets are bulging and dangerous to open? Or that behind the couch there are empty tape dispensers and shopping receipts? No one needs to know that the dessert you're serving came from the grocery store bakery. That's why the pastry box is stashed behind those cans of beans in the pantry cupboard. You tell yourself that when life goes back to normal in the New Year, you will get organized again.

What if you didn't have to hide your disorganization? What if you allowed yourself to enjoy the frenzy of it all? Maybe the way to enjoy the holidays is to welcome the craziness. No matter how organized any of us try to be, unless you simplify the month of December by skipping it totally, there are going to be moments when the kids are rotten, and the house is a mess. That's when the relatives are going to show up on your doorstep that you can't be with for more than 5 minutes without pulling out your hair, which you had hoped would be nicely coiffed for the evening. Wouldn't it be great if we, the disorganized, could create a wish list that would allow us to wrap presents at the last minute and have enough paper and ribbon? Maybe wishing for an organized house to start off with wouldn't hurt either. Then the kids would automatically be able to clean up after themselves, because they would know where everything goes. Well I can wish, can't I?

The best wish I can hope for us all is that we get to enjoy the season with our family and friends. I wish for us all to take many wonderful memories of this Christmas into the New Year, and that the next generation follows our traditions and creates their own. Seasons Greetings everyone!
