Heather Havrilesky

Empty-calorie fun, maybe, but she can pack heat, too. Then she's more like frozen yogurt - good and good for you. So the Oscars aren't exactly cause celebre, but when she tackles something, she takes it seriously. I caught her piece "On Bended Knee: Pro-marriage revivalists praise matrimony as the way and the light." (Salon, June 2, 2002) - and was mesmerized. She pokes W's policies of cash incentives for single welfare mom's to marry; the Alliance for Marriage's idea that only straight people should get to do it; and the slew of "authoritative" authors promoting an institution of duty where "love and happiness are ... beside the point" (Havrilesky). The gist of it is, she writes an intelligent and provocative social argument that reads like a walk through Willy Wonka's house. It's giddy fun - I'd love to see her term papers!

You can catch Havrilesky during the week on Salon, and rumor has it she's working on a novel. Buy it, whatever it is - it will be good. Oh, and there's always tinylittlepenis - just don't read it at the office.
