What Are They Doing?

All of the writers I profile on this site are women I had barely or never heard of before. I didn't set out with a group in mind, I just sort of let myself stumble across them. I'd see something written that I really liked, note the author, then do a little research and write them up. Since writing about them, I see them everywhere - a little bit selective perception, but more due to their hard work and success. It makes me even more insistent that you read them. You're missing a lot of fun if you don't. And to that end, here's a revisit, and a glimpse of what they've been up to lately.

Amanda Hesser, my focus in "Women Who Write About Food", recently put out Cooking for Mr. Latte, a wonderful little tale of Life, Love and What I Cooked that is a collection of her New York Times Magazine pieces and then some. Her recipes have a friendly, let's-mince-garlic-and-have-fun feel and she continues to write delightful pieces for the New York Times, as well as guest spots on Slate and others.

Virginia Heffernan is still churning out stunning TV commentary at Slate - at an alarming and consistent rate. I didn't think it would be possible to keep up that pace - I mean, there are only so many words out there! But she does it. Look!

Also, read this interview with her on Mediabistro, and seethe with envy when you scan her birthdate. She's young, talented and looks really nice - I bet she always finds a parking spot!

Sarah Vowell published The Partly Cloudy Patriot since I wrote about her, and has been touring, doing comedy clubs and talk shows, and being her witty, insightfully charming self. She has a surgical way with words that keeps getting better. Read her recent road-show historical narrative of the patriot classic "Battle Hymn of the Republic" here. (In the "Lost in America" show)

Meghan Daum just came out with The Quality of Life Report. Which was getting favorably reviewed every time I turned around, from The New Yorker to People. She even got a slot in "A Night Out With ..." in The New York Times "Styles" section! It's a fantastic read. It supports all of the wonderful things I said about her. It was worth waiting for and you should go get it fight now!
