EW: A Stark Reminder

Born Again and Again and Again
No longer willing to be relegated to the pop-culture fringes, Christian entertainers - like poppers Amy Grant and Michael W. Smith - became (ahem) hell-bent on (ahem) crossing over. Some wore their beliefs on their sleeves, like religio-rockers Jars of Clay and rappers DC Talk. Others took a more traditional Hollywood approach: The Omega Code made a box office splash by tapping a pent-up demand for Christian movie making, as did the religion-themed Left Behind series, which chased Harry Potter on the charts with its speculative eschatology (theology-speak for How the World Will End). Still others preferred to be a tad more stealthy with their faith; Crypto-Christian bands such as Creed and Sixpence None the Richer kept Jesus completely in the closet as they rocked out.

Entertainment Weekly - May 26, 2000

Now that you've finished reading that bit from EW, count to ten slowly. Very slowly. Now, read on.

Unfortunately, a lot of what was said in that article is true. While the way that it was written conveyed the wrong thing about some of these artists, other things that were conveyed were, unhappily, the stark truth.

The problem is, the Christian music genre is not perfect. Like the rest of the human race, the musicians that we love and listen to are human and therefore they are sinful. They are not expected to be perfect, but when they sin it is much more apparent. And when the sin is not properly dealt with, they become a bad example of what the rest of the Christian music community is like.

Things like the Entertainment Weekly "snippet" make us wonder if there is any good left in the world. Take heart, God has the world in His hands and He has ordained everything that comes to pass. Even things like this article. Don't despair. Instead, ask God to raise up artists that will be a good example to the world and glorify His name so that every knee will bow and every tongue will confess that Jesus Christ is Lord over all.
