Doves 2000: The Nominations

© Jason Ewert

This is the first year I've ever picked what people I think will win so I am not an expert at this and I don't expect my choices to be perfect. I am opinion to suggestions, comments, questions, and criticisms so please let me know either on the Discussion Board or by email what you think of my picks. That said, let us get underway...

Artist of the Year
I believe that the real battle here is between Steven Curtis Chapman and Sixpence None the Richer. Michael W. Smith may be a possibility, but he has not had the popularity or the quality music that Sixpence and SCC have had. However, I think that SCC will win it because he is so popular and Sixpence might not have tons of support from the GMA because of their secular success.

Group of the Year
Sixpence None the Richer definitely deserves to win it because of their immense success in the last year. Avalon and Third Day have also had good years, but they just have not had the popularity that Sixpence have.

Male Vocalist of the Year
A close finish is very possible in this category due to the different styles of artists nominated. On one hand you have pop star Steven Curtis Chapman who is definitely the most popular of any artists nominated, but on the other hand you have inspirational artists Fernando Ortega and Chris Rice who could steal the award from SCC. However, I'm going to go with SCC.

Female Vocalist of the Year
Leigh Nash, Jennifer Knapp, and Jaci Velasquez will be fighting hard for this award. Nash has the mainstream popularity, Knapp the Christian alternative scene, while Jaci has both the Christian pop and mainstream Latin genres in her hands. Nash's Sixpence None the Richer have been the success story of 1999, but I don't think that they have the support that Jaci V. does.
