Far From Speechless

Some Christian music artists always sound the same, both musically and lyrically. When you hear the title of their upcoming album you go, "Yeah, that sounds just like so-and-so". But Steven Curtis Chapman has not followed suit and said something redundant. Instead he's come up with an album title that surprised us all - Speechless.

After taking a year's rest to reflect on various things Steven has given us many more great hits. He has also taken his music further into the style that Signs of Life introduced us to. This is evident throughout the whole album - starting with the first track titled Dive and through to the final track, which sounds like something of a Steve Camp CD, Be Still. And the amazing thing about it all is the fact that SCC has managed once again to turn out a number of great hits which are sure to go high on the charts.

The list of head-turners on Speechless starts with "Dive", a track laden with programming courtesy of bass player Adam Anders. The message is similar to that of Children of the Burning Heart off Signs of Life - the wanting to have a passion for God. The title track is another great song which speaks about how amazing God's grace is - it really does leave you speechless. Next 5 Minutes is an interesting song which has a hardcore bass solo as an intro. The message is simple: Live life to the glory of God. Whatever is one of my favourites which is a statement that says "I will do whatever you say, Lord". The best part is at the end of the song Steven goes wild on his acoustic guitar and lays down some awesome riffs. I Do Believe is very similar to the sixties-rock style and the title says what the song is all about.

The last four songs on the album could be called the "soft-section" as all of the are really slow. What I Really Want to Say is SCC's song to his wife on the album and it sports some really cool strings sections and, personally, I think it is the best song to his wife that he has ever done. With Hope is probably my favourite song on the album. I must admit, when I first heard it I nearly cried. The voice of a little girl singing "Jesus Loves Me" in the beginning flows into the skillful acoustic guitar playing of Steven. Dedicated to the victims of the Paducah shooting and a family who lost their young daughter in a car accident, the song is full of hope and sure to be a hit on radio.
