But his work is not at all simply a negative critique. One senses from his work with Frida Kahlo that his art is also an homage to her. It is as if he is trying to understand her by getting as close to her as possible, inside her artistic skin. In doing so, Yasumasa Morimura suggests a new radical way of understanding history as an artist. Doing it from the inside rather than standing at a fearful, intimidated distance.
