Camellias - The Perfect Winter Garden Flowers

  • ‘Daikagura Variegated’ – large rose-red peony form blossoms marbled in white
  • ‘Alba Plena’ – large white formal double; this variety was brought from China over two centuries ago

A couple other species worth noting are Camellia sasanqua and Camillia sinensis. C. sasanqua can be used for informal hedges, screening and in containers. It produces a multitude of short-lived flowers in autumn and early winter. Most tolerate some sun.

The leaves of C. sinensis are used to make tea. Harvested when they are young and tender, they are fermented to make black tea. Oolong tea is made from partially fermented leaves and for green tea, the leaves are simply dried.

Elegant in their beauty and structured form, green year-round, camellias should be a permanent resident in your container garden.
