Earth Day. There seems to be some cotroversy as to when earth day actually takes place. Some sites claim that the Vernal Equinox is the actual date of earth day. April 22, 2001 marks the 31st anniversary of the first Earth Day that Former U.S. Senator Gaylord Nelson co-founded. This earth day is what helped the Clean Air Act, the Water Quality Improvement Act, the Water Pollution and Control Act Amendments, the Resource Recovery Act and many others become enacted into law. The most important piece of environmental legislation in our history, the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) was signed into law on January 1, 1970 As many as 20 million Americans participated in environmental rallies, demonstrations and other activities in the 1970 Earth Day. Making plans for earth day can range from simple to drastic. You can choose to take the bus to work this month, replace light bulbs with more energy efficient types, or simply observe earth day by planting a tree. Whatever you decide be sure your choice is to do something that will make a difference. Now more than ever, the need to make changes within our homes and communities is of the utmost importance. Many environmentalists are fighting the Bush administration on a national level and losing. I have listed several sites along with ideas to plan for earth day. Perhaps this is your first year to participate in an earth project. Did you know there is an Earth Day Flag which portrays in its center our "Beautiful Blue Planet. It is flown to encourage mutual respect for Earth and all its people. Now is the time to plan for next year. Check the web sites I have included in this article to find events in your area. Attend these events, meet people and exchange numbers or email addresses, ask questions about how they started, and most importantly make plans to be more involved. Earth Day 1970 made it clear that we could summon the public support, the energy, and commitment to save our environment. Here you can do a search for events in your area. Be sure you also do a search for a group in your area. This will give you a connection to others as well as a way to get involved earlier next year.
