Having your lawn fertilized every year just to keep up appearances is contaminating the earth. So how should a person go about keeping their lawn looking nice and still be earth friendly? Well that is what I hope to accomplish in this article. Landscaping is one way that you can add color to your yard and keep it looking wonderful while being earth friendly. Each year take an area of your yard and make a plan to spend the money that would normally go into fertilizer and spend it on landscaping. Of course once you start exploring the different ways to landscape your yard, you may end up spending more than what you would have just to fertilize. However, the effect that your yard will make will be long lasting. Some people do not have the time to make plans and go shopping to pick out plants. This is where the landscaping companys earn their money. It does not matter how you go about getting your yard designed. It is how good it looks and how easy it is to maintain that counts. Oh yeah, and did I mention earth friendly as well.

If you choose to landscape your yard yourself, there are many things that can be done to help beautify your surroundings. Try adding a path of bricks leading to your door. How about a trellis covered in flowers at the end of your walk to make a charming entranceway. There are also many types of groundcovers. These can be placed in areas where no one will be walking. Groundcovers are fairly maintenance free and can look wonderful all year. Hedges are another Item that can add green to the yard even after most plants have retired for the season. They also work well as a privacy fence or a border.

Flowerbeds can be placed in many areas of a yard to hold plants of your choice. The shape and sizes vary depending on your preferences. Using them to border walkways or run along side your house are some of the most popular designs. They can be placed on hillsides to take the shape of steps to add dimension or just simply placed as a centerpiece for your yard.

Some people take an interest in herbs and others like flowers that attract butterflies and humming birds. No matter what your tastes, several plants and flowers will work for your landscaping needs.
