Lyrics can be broadcasted along with the song. Rather than searching wavebands, you can select all available stations or preferred programs from a simple text menu. DAB will work on both terrestrial and satellite networks, and the same receiver could be used to receive radio programs from local, national, regional, and international services. DAB eliminates interference, multipaths and fadeouts. You can cross an entire country listening to the same station without any loss of quality. Tuning becomes easy. All you would have to do is to simply select the station you want from the call letters or names displayed sequentially on your digital radio LCD (liquid crystal display) screen and the computer within the radio will do the rest. One receiver will be able to give both audio and visual services offered by DAB. Services from sources other than the broadcasting station can be included within the same channel. These include real-time news, detailed weather maps, road maps or even the latest stock prices and market quotes. You could receive DAB on your PC.
Because DAB receivers are intelligent, they can be configured to include Pay Radio services. You could subscribe to live coverage of special events or special programs just like your normal pay-per-view channels.
Since DAB is digital it may possibly evolve into your one stop entertainment/informational/communication medium. It is also possible that in the future DAB could transmit and receiver computer files, e-mails and fax transmissions.
Benefits for Broadcasters: DAB allows broadcasters to provide a wide range of services simultaneously on the same frequency. This not only increases the number of channels but also increases the number and type of programs that could be offered. Another advantage is that Signal-gap areas (areas where signals cannot penetrate due to blockages caused by hills or buildings etc) can be easily filled by installing digital radio repeaters. The digital receiver will be able to select the most powerful source of transmission and focus itself on it to provide its output.
Value added services using DAB's text and visual display capabilities will work to enhance listener-ship and revenues.
DAB will reduce transmission costs greatly since the digital radio transmitters can carry up to six stereo services at once, meaning that the cost of transmission can be shared among six stations.
