Giving Thanks

I want to digress somewhat from my typical weekly writings, and delve into something a little different. I give thanks every morning that I can open my eyes and get out of bed. I give thanks for my family, my health and the many opportunities I have been blessed with. My life has truly been an extraordinary journey.

Today, I find myself reflecting on my days on this earth as an American, and what that means to me. I have a passion for history and that love of studying the past has educated me about how I came to realize how very blessed I am to be living in the United States of America.

Although 9-11 has made that fact much more pronounced, I have always been blessed to be living in this land. I love that I'm able to live free - especially knowing that it (freedom) didn't come that way (free). I love knowing that I can vote - trying to stay confident that it will actually count. I love knowing that I can live where I want to live, eat where I want to eat, swim where I want to swim and associate with whomever I choose. I love being able to freely express myself without fear of reprisals - all the while hoping that it will remain that way. I love being a proud American, without being a pompous American. Finally, I love that the Bill of Rights now protects all of America's citizens, rather than a select few.

I also have a few visions for our future. I see this country as a true partner in the international community; fighting for some of the same protections we enjoy, the same freedoms we treasure. I envision our leaders joining with other leaders across the globe to combat global warming, poverty, injustice and terrorism. I can rejoice in victory, when all the people across the lands get to know each other better - particularly if they are of a different race, religion or nationality.

"Throughout its history, America has given hope, comfort and inspiration to freedom's cause in all lands. The reservoir of goodwill and respect for America was not built up by American arms or intrigue; it was built upon our deep dedication to the cause of human liberty and welfare."

Fitting words, but not mine. They come courtesy of Adlai E. Stevenson in 'Call to Greatness,' a man who obviously knew what a wonderful world this could be...and I am thankful for that too.
