My Picks: The aforementioned pumpkins, and Tristar strawberries, which I grew back when I lived in Washington. To my surprise, I had a lovely harvest of delicious strawberries from May through October after planting the bare-root plants in March.

Tomato Growers Supply Company Ahhhhhhhh, tomatoes. Tomato Growers specializes in tomatoes, peppers and eggplant, all heat-loving members of the nightshade family. Their selection is excellent. My Picks: Romanian Rainbow, Purple Jalapeno, Golden Marconi, and Anaheim TMR peppers. Also Yellow Canary tomato, the sister of Red Robin (see below), both of which are dwarf tomatoes which can be container-grown indoors.

Totally Tomatoes Another specialty tomato company, Totally Tomatoes' catalog is like the National Enquirer of seeds catalogs - loud and sensational at the expense of being explicitly informative. However, they do include a brief guide to growing tomatoes in their catalog, and they carry an extensive selection of tomatoes and peppers. My Picks: MiniBelle and Tennessee Cheese peppers, Red Robin dwarf tomato and - a special purchase for my daughter - Rainbow Cherry Tomato Mix.

Vermont Bean Seed Company Mostly - you guessed it - beans, including many wonderful heirlooms, but also some corn, tomatoes, flowers, peppers, and supplies. My picks: Goliath snow pea, Wren's Egg pole shell bean, Amish Knuttel and Pinto pole dry beans. I grow almost solely varieties that can be trellised. My exceptions are edamame, or green vegetable soybeans and a fall-crop bush snap bean called Masai, available from Pinetree Seeds. I suspect there must be pole varieties of edamame, as the Japanese are rightfully famous for their space-saving gardening, although I haven't yet found any. And I plant Masai for a fall harvest, when its yields are too good to pass up and I don't need the space so much anymore.
