Thanks to a tip from John Stephens, Assistant Professor of Public Management and Government at the University of North Carolina, I took a look at CRInfo, a web site that has been around for a while but has recently undergone some changes. I was not disappointed, and I am confident that the readers of this column will not be disappointed either.
CRInfo at http://www.CRInfo.org may be the best conflict resolution web site I've seen since I've been reviewing these sites. It certainly gets superior marks as a so-called supersite or clearinghouse site. I do not believe there is a topic related to conflict resolution that is not represented on the CRInfo site. In fact, there is almost too much information. If it weren't for the expert coding and categorization of the material, the site would overwhelm the reader. A shorthand description of CRInfo would be that it is a Yahoo-like site devoted entirely to conflict resolution and related subjects. The site is completely searchable and utilizes the "nesting" system found on Yahoo and similar search engines. In other words, the reader can progressively narrow a search from very general to more and more specific information. And even with the powerful searching systems, the site is very user friendly and interesting to view. CRInfo was started with a grant from the William and Flora Hewlett Foundation. Its Governing Board and Advisory Committee include well-known academicians and practitioners in the field of conflict resolution, and graduate students do much of the coding and other tasks involved with maintaining the site. I suspect that the academic influence explains why every aspect of the site and its operation are described and defined. I found I learned quite a bit about web site databases and other Internet technologies from reading the explanatory material on CRInfo. Who should look at the CRInfo site? Anyone with either a casual or a serious interest in conflict resolution. The reader can find the most basic or most sophisticated material on this supersite. Check it out. Until next time...
