Conflict Resolution on the College Campus

With schools and colleges starting up again, this is a good time to look at a web site that focuses on university-based mediation and conflict resolution programs. Campus Mediation Resources, developed and maintained by Dr. William Warters, a professor at Wayne State University in Detroit, MI, can be found by going to http://www.mtds.wayne.edu, and then clicking on Campus Mediation Resources.

I like the site, first of all, because it provides an abundance of information and support for those who are either developing or operating mediation programs on other college campuses. The site is easy to navigate, and the Table of Contents, found on the opening page, includes a list of topics that ranges from the broadly abstract to the more specific and concrete. Geared to students, faculty, and administrators, the site includes links to articles about the philosophical underpinnings of mediation, sample mediation policies from different colleges, as well as links to more general ADR resources and organizatons.

The other reason I find Campus Mediation Resources (CMR) a very useful site is its upgraded search tools. A user can now search the site in a variety of ways. The "Full WWW Portal" method provides an index to all of the CMR pages and all the pages to which CMR has links. Other search methods include "Our Article Collection" that confines the search to articles posted on the site, and "Program Development Info" that limits the search to technical assistance materials posted on the site.

Although CMR does provide links to general ADR sites, it is probably most helpful to those interested in dispute resolution in academic settings. But within that fairly narrow context, the site is a true primer for operating a conflict resolution service on a college campus. Dr. Warters has done an excellent job of gathering and categorizing the necessary information and resources to support such an effort.

By the way, I learned about CMR through an e-mail. I will always check out sites that readers bring to my attention, so keep those e-mails coming.

Until next time...
