August 30, 2001.
The day started with my arrival at the courthouse for Dmitry's hearing. This was a fast hearing. He entered a plea of not guilty and it was over. Dmitry and counsel left the building. I jokingly offered for reporters to interview me, since I authored the "DMCA" but I had to get to San Francisco for the protest. Many authors and lawyers speak on cyberlaw and they do that well. What is really nice to see is when these authors and figures in our computing community participate in demonstrations and protests. Jessica Littman and Larry Lessig have written some fine books on computer law and perhaps that is their way to protest. I have yet to see or hear of them actually demonstrating. RMS, Richard Stallman demonstrated. He marched all the way from Moscone Center to the Federal Building. Along with him was Bruce Perens, a Linux Community figure who spoke with Stallman at the Federal Building. The Russian news crew at NTV also marched to the Federal Building. It doesn't take a lot of effort to march or protest. I hope that if you really believe in something and there is a protest nearby, you will take the time to make the effort! Make an effort and take the time!
