Dmitry Sklyarov, Russian cryptographer was arrested by FBI officials on his way to McCarran Airport in Las Vegas, NV. For days, people were unaware of his whereabouts. When I heard Dmitry was arrested on the first ever arrest using the DMCA, I immediately wanted to know how he was, was he ok?
Dmitry has a family in Russia, a 3 month old child and another small child. Dmitry is a graduate candidate and only 27 years old. I called the Clark County Detention Center, but Dmitry was not there. Later, we found out that Dmitry was in Northtown in the North Las Vegas Detention Center. I sent him a copy of my book "DMCA", however, he was moved before he got it. We at DMCASUCKS.org called Rep. Boucher twice on July 20 and called Adobe and spoke to a representative on July 20. According to Adobe, the arrest was a Federal matter, nothing to do with Adobe. Adobe had no press release to offer, however they did offer the FBI pr contact information. July 23, 2001 protests were globally initiated. During the planning process, Adobe agreed to meet with the EFF. The EFF announced that according to Adobe, the protests would interfere with the planned meeting. Myself and Rares Marian (who worked on the GAIM case) drove to Albuquerque, NM from Phoenix to attend the protest. We met with a lot of people and discussed the DMCA. The protesters there were really great. Pics to come. Dmitry was transfered to Oklahoma City Federal Transfer Center. Many protests have erupted all across the nation. What was Dmitry's Crime The company Dmitry worked for in Russia developed software that makes ebooks readable for Linux, the blind and others. The DMCA was used in this case. Section 1201 states that you can not distribute a product or device which circumvents encryption. 160 people marched in San Francisco on July 31, to protest the DMCA. Sites have been developed: http://www.boycottadobe.com http://www.freesklyarov.org http://www.anti-dmca.org and the old sites: http://www.cryptome.org http://www.dmcasucks.org http://www.eff.org http://www.lemuria.org http://www.dibona.org - online petition. There will be a petition drive to follow. Update: August 6, 2001, Dmitry was let out on bail pending hearing date August 23.
