If you've got an original copy of Windows NT, you've got a copy of Internet Explorer. Version 2. Wanting to update to version 4 or 5, an NT user recently tried to connect to www.microsoft.com. Only to be told that "Unable to open

In the know readers will know about the GPS rollover problem that happened with older GPS systems in August. Apparently this created quite a problem in Japan. A lot of streets in Tokyo are unnamed, and GPS equipped cars (with older model receivers) started selling very early there, and were heavily relied upon.

There was also at least one instance of a problem on the water, as the Irish Marine Service had to deal with a yacht that lost its positioning at the same time.

Amazon's new "purchase circles" service has some companies in a bit of a tizzy. You can tell the top ten books ordered by people at different companies, cities, and so forth. Students at Stanford are using it as a "Dilbert Index" of companies to avoid working for: if they order a lot of new age management books and relatively few techie tomes, run away! However, it does provide an example of database insecurity, where you can gain a lot of information from something that supposedly strips out personal information. Stock prices could take a beating if too many people in your company start ordering "What Color is Your Parachute?" for example. Other problems include unknown checks on the accuracy of data, and the possibility of spoofing.
