Do $1,000 PCs Make for a Healthy Computer Industry?The OEMs are also betting on the fact that a substantial amount of citizens have still not bought their first PC, and these first time buyers would generate a huge volume wave. Unfortunately, the volume will fall short of expectations. Although the buyers may buy the PC the first year, seeing their enticing prices, when they come back, they won't buy again until the PC becomes a machine simple enough for the average Joe and Jane to use. After all, how many of the common people know what an IRQ conflict is, anyway? The real winner in this war will be the first company to create a low-cost, easy to use and maintain PC for the common people. So, ironically, 15 years after the introduction of the Apple Macintosh, other OEMs, not Apple, will be creating the low-cost, easy to use machine for the rest of us. Read more of my weekly articles.
