What's the thing most Internet devotees hate most? Spam. In case you don't know what I'm talking about, spam is the word used to denote electronic junk mail (or Internet mass mailings to say Usenet newsgroups). It's like junk mail in the mail, but spam is even more profitable. Just take a look at the stats: If you can afford to pay for Internet access, you can afford to pay for spam. Sending snail mail to the same amount of people would be expensive in comparison. Plus, with spam, you usually know who you're sending mail to. It's easy to get profiles of people, because many companies sell your profile. For example, Cyber Promotions, an spamming company, made millions of dollars last year. Had it used regular snail mail, it would have cost them 100 times as much to mail their stuff. But finally, some companies are beginning to control spam more. Some ISPs have a "spam block" option that lets you block mail from well known spammers. What I'm trying to get to, though, is the UDP (Usenet Death Penalty). It sounds kind of ghastly, and basically, it's a bunch of Usenet activists that give this UDP to companies who aren't helping to fight spam. The latest of these companies is Netcom. Netcom is a very large and pretty old ISP. In fact, if I remember right, it's second only to UUNet in terms of reselling its network traffic to smaller ISPs. Anyway, what the UDP does is that it bans all Usenet messages coming from Netcom's domain from being posted. This is because Netcom's users have consistently been some of the worst spammers over the last few months. Netcom responded by saying it would strengthen its anti-spam policies, so it could kick members off or bring them to court if they spammed. The UDP also said that it would lift the ban if Netcom acted. Two other companies, CSi, and UUNet also have gotten the UDP before. If it strengthens Netcom's and other ISP's anti-spam policies, the UDP will certainly be worth it. Read more of my weekly articles. Discuss one of my articles or any news topic you like.
