Preview Return to Castle WolfensteinBack in 1993, a little game arrived on the computer gaming scene that changed my world. This game, Wolfenstein 3D, changed my perceptions as to what a computer game could be. This game, in some ways, changed my life. This was not just any computer game. It was THE computer game! This was the game that turned me into a hard-core gamer, the game that turned me into a gaming writer. The game that made me realize one could earn money writing about games, Thank you, Wolf and Thank you ID software! Since then there was a sequel called Spear of Destiny, which was all the Wolf was and more. Sure it wasn’t really 3D but the first person perspective was realistic enough for the time. Getting yelled at by those Nazis was, at the least, unnerving. And who could forget the dying German words, “ Mein Leiben.” Since then there have been many 1st person shooters released but none have had the same impact on me as Wolf. Since that time I have been longing for more of Wolf and this week I got it. Sort of. What I actually got was a multiplayer test demo that has been unleashed on the Internet called Return to Castle Wolfenstein. This demo contains one map and it is multiplayer only. But what a map. ID has nothing to do with this version of Wolf though, except as overseers. Grey Matter using the Quake III Arena game engine is developing the game! Return ROCKS! I base that view on the look of the single map. It is stunning. The models are looking good and the scenery is wonderful. Yes it’s a multiplayer map that means that folks with dial-up modems will insist on trying to play the game, slowing down the rest of us. I hate to sound elitist here but if you live in an area with DSL or cable grab it – it’s the single best upgrade you can make for only a few bucks a month. Not only will I appreciate it but also so will you, as your online gaming becomes easier and smoother. Seeing this multiplayer test map of the upcoming Wolf game fills my heart with warmth. It won’t be long until I finally get to Return to Castle Wolfenstein. I am drooling in anticipation of the release of this little game. With any luck, it just might change my life again.
