Review: Ultimate Steroids

© Randy Scott

Ultimate Steroids is a free game, ya gotta love free! This is simply a remake of the old Asteroids game. If you were a fan of the original then you are bound to like this. You must have an OpenGl compatible 3D card to enjoy it though, that's not really a problem in today's market - most decent video cards are compatible with the OpenGl standard.

The game is pretty enough, OpenGl is something that when well done looks very good, the problem is with the game. It's just not a ton of fun!

You can control the game using either the mouse or keyboard. I chose the mouse and the control worked well enough. It takes a bit of practice but after time you'll get the hang of it. You guide your ship through the universe blasting rocks and asteroids along the way you'll collect power-ups. There are also a few surprises that the developers throw in along the way. It sounds OK but it's not.

It is very hard to describe just how un-fun Ultimate Steroids is. It's monotonous, tedious and repetitive but it looks fine. In this case however looks are not enough and neither is the fact that it's free. No, there are little if any redeeming features to this game.

One of the features talked about on the site is the games' ability to play your music in the form of mods or other strange music formats. The feature works but it's not enough to recommend the game. Also the system requirements are fairly substantial, that doesn't help this game any either.

In the long run, you are better off paying for a game rather than downloading this free piece of trash. You get what you pay for.
