Over the past few days, I have been lucky enough to stumble across a fun game that took me back to the early days of PC gaming. Back then side-scrollers were all the rage. If you’re familiar with Sonic and Mario then you know of what I speak. Lightweight Ninja fits easily into that mold.
Back then I used to look forward to seeing what new games might be released. I love side-scrollers and they were my introduction to PC gaming. Lightweight Ninja brings back so many good memories that I can’t help but recommend this little game. Lightweight Ninja is as simple a game as you’re likely to find nowadays. You simply need to learn 6 keys and you can play the game. Not only that but the system requirements are so low it’s almost as though the game was release in 1991 instead of 2001! At first glance you might think that Lightweight Ninja was a child’s game. You’d be right, it is easy enough for kids but don’t dismiss it entirely for yourself. I had so much fun with this, and yes I am a hard-core gamer! The graphics are nice, well done for a side-scroller. You won’t need a 3D card but you’ll find the graphics quite charming. All the enemy characters are clean and very well drawn. The backgrounds are not quite as good as they could be but the whole thing has the look of a Saturday morning cartoon. As with every side-scroller there are items to collect, for points, there are items to throw at enemies in self-defense and there are save points. Normally, I am completely against save-points in PC games, I am of the opinion that developers need to use the strong points of PC’s when developing games and in this case that is the hard drive, but they work in side-scrollers and they certainly work here. The sounds are appropriate but nothing too exciting, Stardock might well have spent a little more time in this area. The sounds are not a game breaker, however. The developer, Stardock, has created a charming little game that just begs to be played. Miss this game and you’ll actually be sorry. If you’re not sure this game is for you pop on over to Stardock (www.stardock.com) and download the 3 level Lightweight Ninja demo. You’ll see and you’ll thank me.
