A look at the Demo of Swarm AssaultThe Real Media player is ubiquitous. Even if you try to avoid it you can’t. Now the same is becoming true with a series of games that Real is releasing. They are releasing a shareware version free on their site and if you want the full version well, it’s cheap and easy to get. I took a look at a strategy game called,” Swarm Assault.” Essentially, Swarm Assault involves using ants, ladybugs and various critters as your units and the idea is destroy the opposition. The game is a farce. There are no strategic elements whatsoever within the game. You simply build some troops and attack the enemy. The graphics are not bad but would have been spectacular in 1996! Even strategy games have progressed further than these graphics are. There is virtually no AI. All the troops are dumber than doorknobs! Gameplay is virtually nonexistent. Click on your home building and click once to produce an army of critters. There is no resource management, in fact it didn’t seem as if the troops cost anything either. There is nothing to harvest and apparently no coinage of any nature. So that precludes Swarm Assault from being called a traditional real-time strategy game. Is it a tactical game? No, unfortunately it’s just a waste of your time.
I could continue to slam this game but why waste your time or mine. If you must play this piece of trash you’ll find it at the Real site. You’ll find a lot of games at the Real site, I’ve taken a look at others and none seem to be worth your time. Real has the right to sell these things and you have the right to buy them and they will be tempting to buy because they are so inexpensive. Well take the cost into consideration: if they don’t cost alot perhaps they aren’t worth alot. In order to download the shareware version of Swarm Assault you’ll be asked to download something called Real Download Express. While this sounds like a good thing I would avoid it like the plague. I downloaded it and while it may help you resume your downloads if they get interrupted and they do automatically install the game for you I found some suspicious behavior with the program. I have a broadband connection and as such I run a firewall – you all should have a firewall if you have a fast connection. The firewall reports to me activity that I haven’t approved of in advance. Several times after downloading the Real Download Express program it attempted to access the Internet and would have done so had I not had the firewall set-up to disallow unauthorized access. Why would this program want to access the Internet on it’s own?
