Star Trek Voyager: Elite Force PreviewDeveloper: Raven Software Publisher: Activision Star Trek Voyager: Elite Force The Star Trek universe is one of the more under achieving franchises in the history of computer gaming. Unlike its' counterpart, Star Wars, the vast majority of Star Trek games have been, with few exceptions, disappointing, to say the least. Raven software has plans to change the way we see Star Trek games in the future. Raven has been using id game engines to produce games for years. Most recently the Raven team hit pay dirt with Soldier of Fortune. Soldier used a modified Quake II engine, perhaps I should say heavily modified because it was hard to tell that it was the aging Quake II engine. Raven is at it once again, taking the Quake III Arena engine and twisting and tuning it to suit their own ends. This time Raven ventures into the Star Trek universe and boldly goes where no game designer has gone before, into the world of Star Trek Voyager. As with previous titles based on id game engines, Hexen was based on the Doom engine, Raven not only adds a solid story line but they also add to the game play. To that end Raven has given you a choice to make right off the bat; do you want to play as a man or a woman? This is a choice that is certainly long over due and with luck we'll see that choice more often. Once that happens we need to convince designers to make the decision have an impact on the game play. One battle at a time, I suppose. Star Trek Voyager: Elite Force places you squarely in the red uniform of a security officer. Those of you who remember the original Star Trek will immediately see that as a bad omen; the red uniformed dudes were always the one who ended up buying the farm. They were expendable. You, however, are not just any security officer however; you are a part of the Hazard Team. Lt. Tuvok formed the Hazard Team to in order to deal with some of the more dangerous situations the Voyager folks often found themselves in. Tuvok assembled the best security officers and saw to it that they received added military training in the following areas: weapons, combat, stealth, infiltration and weapons. This team was designed to be able to handle just about any situation they might run into.
