Companies/games in the news a while back, are in it again Many companies, people and games that appeared here in the news since nearly a year ago seemed to have cropped into newsworthy items once again. Here's a run down of recent happenings in the gaming community, most of which are related to articles published at Suite101.com - Computer Gaming News since last summer.
Half-Life... Delayed Again!?
The game Half-Life, published by Sierra, might be delayed once again. Originally it was set to be shipped to stores in November of 1997, but then it was pushed back to the first quarter of 1998, and now there's rumors that it may even be delayed longer. Sierra's Internet site (http://www.sierra.com) recently posted Half-Life would be released June of this year. There was some mix-up, though, and it will actually (and hopefully) come out early this summer.
Starship Titanic ships
News of the development of Starship Titanic appeared here almost a year ago, but now it's finally arrived in stores. The story line of Starship was written by Douglas Adams, author of the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Universe series of books. The publisher, Simon & Schuster Interactive, expect this to be a successful game. They'll have shipped 200,000 copies of the game by the end of April, their biggest game yet. Humor will figure largely into this adventure game. Adams is known for his humor in writing, and ex-Monty Pythoner Terry Jones has been recruited to provide the voice of the main character's sidekick, a parrot.
Classic Activision
Activision, recently sued by MicroProse for copyright infringement, announced they will remake the classic arcade game Asteroids. Originally released in 1979, Asteroids arrived on the Atari 2600 in 1981. Activision bought the rights of Asteroids from Atari, and with the help of far superior technology then in the 1980's, will convert it into a 3D action game (multi-player enhanced), hopefully available by Christmas for the PC and Sony Playstation.
I guess some companies want more then their 15 minutes of fame so they keep coming back time after time. But I suppose if they're newsworthy enough once, they're bound to appear again. Gamers can always look to some to be there in the news.
