Future of PC Gaming: Doomed to an Early Death?

As the appeal for consoles grows, the support for computers dwindles. This has become most evident in the sporting genre. At this year's E3 there was only one major sports title featured - EA's "Madden NFL 2001" - and the graphics set was based on that designed for the PlayStation 2. It will be essentially a port to the PC; no change from last year's game play, and only improved graphics because of the work first done for the PlayStation. Microsoft and other developers have begun to focus only on the X-Box and the PlayStation. That's very disappointing, but understandable. Sales for PC games is pitiful compared to their console counterparts. The market dictates producers move out of the PC market and into others.

Will the PC last as a gaming platform? I'm not sure, but hopefully it will. While more expensive, it's just as good as any console at gaming, probably better right now. It will always do strategy games more justice than any console. Better control (mouse and keyboard) will translate into better micro-management and a more fulfilling strategy experience. Action, RPG, sports, and simulations such as racing and flying are a toss-up. What will happen in the next year? No one knows. Loyalists should disregard the console platform and support the better overall computer. Controls, a wider range of software, better Internet support, and the ability to upgrade whenever you wish will always make it superior.
