"Star Wars" to become major force in multiplayer
Computer Gaming News since March 1, 2000: No offense to "Quake 3" or "Unreal Tournament" fans, but perhaps the best news ever for multiplayer games was recently announced. LucasArts has teamed up with Sony Online Entertainment and Verant Interactive to produce a "massively multiplayer Star Wars game." A release date sometime in 2001 is expected. No other series holds as much potential for multiplayer gaming as the Star Wars universe. Massive ground assaults or dogfights in space are possible. The possibilities are so varied and numerous there is no way this can't work. The game next in line for those featuring battling angels is due to hit stores any time now. "Messiah" from Shiny Entertainment and published by Interplay has gone gold and should be available very soon. The game puts you into the wings of Bob the cherub angel, who has been sent to earth to fix what ails it. To accomplish this you're allowed to possess characters to gain control of their abilities. Possession of other characters has been done before, but not to its fullest potential, so this may be an intriguing game just for that matter. For your information, the previous angel / demon game was "Requiem: Avenging Angel" which was released last year. Project Two Interactive, a games developer from the Netherlands, has declared bankruptcy. The company could no longer manage its debts, and the final total of the bankruptcy should be around $5,000,000 US. They are the developers of games such as "Plane Crazy" and the "Jazz Jackrabbit" series. That series featured a fleet footed rabbit that carried a gun, blasting and evading evil turtles. It was once said to be the "Sonic the Hedgehog" of the PC. The company had a lot going for it, and it's too bad they're going out of business. The first simulation based on the "Star Trek" licensed has been announced. Activison has signed Totally Games to develop "Star Trek: Bridge Commander," currently scheduled to be released in 2001. The gamer will be put in the Captain's chair and be allowed to command the ships in the Federation fleet. The game will feature the voices of Patrick Stewart and Brent Spiner as Capt. Jean-Luc Picard and Commander Data, respectively. Totally Games have previously worked with many other licenses of entertainment property, and so are experienced in developing these types of games. Hopefully they can produce something to the liking of "Star Trek" fans. Go To Page: 1 2
