People Like the Sims

Computer Gaming News since 02/01/2000:

In a move sure to cause disgust for some, Singapore lifted its ban on the sale of the game "Half-Life." Once deemed "...too violent and destructive to children," Sierra's 1998 Game of the Year will no longer have to compete with Singapore's ban. I'm not positive how Singapore's rating system is enforced (or if they even have one), but hopefully this is a move to put more responsibility in the hands of Singapore parents.

And you thought Maxis's "SimCity 3000" was a goldmine. It appears that the newly released "The Sims" is an even greater cash cow. It is already the fastest selling game for Maxis of all time, shipping over 250,000 copies of the game in North America. This number is already twice that of "SimCity 3000" which enjoyed a few weeks alone at the top of the best-selling games' charts. People just can't get enough of playing God, thanks to the game created by the designer of the original "SimCity", Will Wright. "The Sims" allow you to take control of a person and lead them through life. It's somewhat like a personal soap opera.

More "Who Wants to be a Millionare?" news: The PC version of the popular game show from Disney has already sold more than one million copies in less than just four weeks (by the time you read this it will be much more than that). Stores just can't seem to keep it in stock, at least not in North America. Note to last month's readers: I know I promised this article would delve deep into the hysteria surrounding this gargantuan of a game. However, I have decided to put that idea on hold until later. From this point on, I promise not to make any more promises about future articles :-)
