CGN: Something for everyoneThe top games of the Christmas season One week until Christmas... Most people should be done with their shopping, but are you? Do you still need to find that last gift, or perhaps add a gift to your own list? This week I'll give you a run-down on the games for Christmas. Age of Empires II: The Age of Kings, Strategy: The sequel to last year's successful game from Microsoft provides much more of the same good stuff. The game already at the top of the charts allows players to control civilizations from the Mongols to the Vikings in an epic story spanning from the Dark Ages to the Imperial Age. AOE should appeal to anyone who enjoys strategy games or history in general. Even if you don't like strategy games, you may find yourself getting hooked on AOE. Madden NFL 2000 and NHL 2000, Sports: Both games come from the leader in sports games, Electronic Arts. Both are also the best sports games around right now. Only NBA Live 2000, also from EA, may rival these two games in quality, but that's still to be seen. Both Madden and NHL improve on last year's games with better all-around game play. If you're into football or hockey at all, these are the two games to get. Quake III Arena, Action: This first-person shooter from id Software is perhaps the most hyped game ever. Will it live up to its billing? Maybe. It has incredible graphics and an emphasis on multi-player games; the strongest part of most action games. It will undoubtedly be fun if you like this type of game, but for how long is another question. Tomb Raider: The Last Revelation, Action / Adventure: This is the fourth installment in a series that seems to be slowing down quite quickly. The first game was literally a revelation in the computer game industry. But since then Eidos seems to have just cashed in on the name recognition, releasing two uninspired games soon after one another. Still, the Tomb Raider series may be the best action / adventure games out there. And hopefully this fourth game will prove this. Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six: Rogue Spear, Action: This is a sequel to Red Storm Entertainment's heralded "Rainbow Six". The game was in contention for last year's game of the year status, but was beaten out by "Half-Life". Rogue Spear may have closed the gap between the two games, though. Headed by author Tom Clancy, Red Storm improves on everything from their last game. You can now lead your counter-terrorist unit in with better graphics and more realistic interaction. Not for novices, but great for any experienced gamer out there.
