E3 - Part 1

This week's article is devoted to the Electronic Entertainment Expo (or E3), that took place recently. The expo showcases what's up next in the electronic entertainment business. Everything from the new console game systems to computer software and hardware is put on display for all the fair goers to see. This is THE show to see if you are interested in what's in the industry's future. This week I'll deal with some of the most anticipated role-playing and strategy games seen at E3 that you may see in the very near future.

RPG:
Diablo II - The sequel to arguably one of the top RPGs ever features more of the same, only in larger amounts. The player's surroundings have been vastly improved with a new 3D accelerated view that gives the illusion the game is played in more than the actual two dimensions. The improved graphics makes all the environs more realistic, even including fluid fog and shadow effects. Also expanding are the character classes. In addition to the standard Diablo classes, there are now amazons, barbarians, necromancers, paladins, and sorceresses.

System Shock II - This is the sequel to an unappreciated classic made way back in 1994. The game is a melting pot of genres; it includes action, role-playing, and science fiction elements. The player begins by waking up in the middle of a spaceship with no knowledge of how he/she or their cyborg implants got there. As the game unrolls, the character will develop to the players liking, anywhere from a violent, gun toting maniac, to a science loving pacifist (okay, maybe not that extreme).

Strategy:
Black and White - In my opinion, this looks like it could by one of the most unique games ever. The player takes control of a civilization in the make-believe world of Eden. The game responds to how you play the game; an evil strategy will result in both your people and the land around changing to the darker side, while a saintly approach will result in a peaceful country side with your people living in harmony. However, the overall goal is to lead your people in the conquest of the rest of the world. Everything is up to you.

Homeworld - Another game with the possibility to redefine the strategy genre. This science-fiction real-time strategy game takes place in three dimensions; everything from war to resource production will now be able to be manipulated in more than the standard ways. The story's pretty good, too. Your people have discovered they don't belong on their current planet. Underneath the planet is a spaceship that presumably brought you to this world, and everyone now wants to return to wherever it came from, the Homeworld.
